Traditional search engine optimization was built for a world where Google returned 10 blue links and users clicked them. That world is ending.

Generative engines — ChatGPT, Perplexity, Claude, Gemini, Google AI Overview — don't rank pages. They synthesize answers from sources they trust and cite. Getting ranked means nothing if you're not getting cited.

GEO is the practice of building your digital presence so that AI systems can parse, trust, and reference your content when generating answers. It requires a completely different architecture than SEO.

A plain-text file at your root URL that tells AI crawlers exactly what your business is, what you do, and what to cite you for. The AI equivalent of robots.txt but for discovery not exclusion.

Clean, stripped markdown versions of every page at a predictable URL. When AI tries to read your site it doesn't have to parse nav bars, popups, and scripts. It reads pure content.

The term "Generative Engine Optimization" was first coined in academic research from Princeton University, the University of Chicago, IIT Delhi, and Georgia Tech in 2023. The paper — "GEO: Generative Engine Optimization" — established the foundational framework for optimizing content to be retrieved and cited by AI systems. We were building on this research while most agencies were still debating whether AI search was real.
